Brawlers Pub Moscow

Don’t let the name put you off – at Brawlers Pub you don’t need to be Mike Tyson just to get past the doorman. Like all major cities in the world, Moscow has its fair share of Irish themed pubs, but Brawlers Pub is one of my favourites for a few reasons.

  1. Brawlers is sensibly priced. Most Irish bars are traditionally overpriced, but with Brawlers this is not the case. A pint of the Irish black stuff is between 100-200 rubles cheaper than most Irish bars around the city.
  1. It’s local to me. This may sound obvious, but most Irish bars are in the city center and that means a big travel in on either the metro or the bus. For me this is a short bus ride away and easy to get home from. I suspect that this bar attracts a lot of people living close by, which for me makes it a more ‘honest’ pub, catering to locals.
  1. Even though the décor is the usual faux Irish, many of the decorations seem to have been added to by the staff and customers. Sitting along side the normal items you would expect in an Irish pub are German football scarves, Russian ice hockey pendants, imported bottled English ales and even a Welsh football scarf, which was a delight to see.

In addition to the points above, the menu at Brawlers Pub is a nice mix of some Irish intertwined with local Russian cuisine and so far everything I have eaten there has been very tasty and excellent value. One downside for me is that while they do have an English menu, it seems to be a slimmed down version of their full menu. I often order something, but then see a waitress passing me with a tray of wonderful food that wasn’t on my menu. Then I obviously want that food, not the meal I ordered! This is more my fault for not being able to speak Russian, but it does mean that if you take a Russian friend with you, you will have a bigger choice of food items to taste.

Brawlers Pub has live music at weekends and hosts special events. Darts, billiards and board games are available for customers to use. Overall, this is a great pub for someone who wants to have a laid back atmosphere, watch some sports while eating good food and drinks while hanging out with local Moscovites and listening to some local bands. You can keep up to date with all the latest events at brawlers via their Facebook page.
