When you are new to a city, being shown around is a great way to get your bearings and for this reason, many tourists opt for a paid tour. However not everyone enjoys or can afford to fork out for tours, which can sometimes be seriously expensive. Luckily, if you look hard enough, it is easy to find free walking tours in many major capital cities, where you will be shown around by a local. Moscow is no different and today I will introduce you to three great options for free walking tours in Moscow.
1. Moscow Greeter
This tour operator is part of the ‘Global Greeter Network’ who aim to provide free city tours with local people. Unlike other free tours, this company will not try and up-sell you to a paid tour on the back of the freebie. however, if you do enjoy your tour, a donation to the organisation is welcome. You are encouraged to book at least two weeks in advance of your trip on their website: http://www.moscowgreeter.ru/
2. Moscow Free Tours
This company tops Tripadvisor for free tours and they have been running them successfully for quite some time. The free walking tour is used as a way to up sell you to paid tours, but I think that is a fair trade. In fact, having the free tour should get you interested enough in seeing more that you will want to do another tour anyway! You can book the free tours at their website: http://moscowfreetour.com/
This project started by some idealistic university students offers you free itineraries, complete with maps so that you can go on your very own, self paced tour. their very professionally produced booklets offer up a fair bit of information and will show you the best of what the city has to offer. While it may not be as good as a guided option, setting your own schedule has its own benefits. Download the guides at their website: http://moswalks.ru/
The great benefit of these free, volunteer run tours is that you get to meet locals who are enthusiastic about their city and willing to share their knowledge. If you take full advantage of this opportunity you may be able to discover some hidden gems well off the tourist trail.
