Summer is upon us again in Moscow and that means summer holidays! This time of year gives us the best weather Moscow has to offer, so it is a little strange that it is also when most people leave to go abroad. I have as much wanderlust as the next person, so I have put together a list of the 5 top destinations to visit from Moscow this summer.
I have tried to steer clear of the typical destinations and find some of the more exciting international destinations that are easily accessible from Moscow.
Russia’s southern neighbor Georgia has a lot to offer and is a great budget destination to visit from Moscow. With a beautiful stretch of Black Sea coast, as well as the stunning Caucasus mountain range, there is a slice of nature to suit just about anyone.
You will fly into the capital Tbilisi, which is a surprisingly European capital. Other highlights include the Black Sea town of Batumi. If you are a little more adventurous, you can also head over to Armenia and check it out!
Flights from Moscow start from $300, making this a great value holiday.
Cuba has intrigued me for a long time, so when the USA began to normalise relations with the Caribbean island I rejoiced. It is now easier than ever to visit Cuba and it is fast becoming a top tourist destination. It is time to get in quick and experience the unique charm of Cuba before it disappears forever.
Cuba is definitely not a cheap destination right now and the influx of tourists is driving up prices. There is simply not enough capacity to meet demand yet. Direct round trip flights from Moscow are currently around $1600, but if you are willing to make a stopover, you can get flights as low as $750.
Iran is another country that has been brought in from the cold and is fast becoming a top tourist destination. This makes it a great place to visit from Moscow. Rather than beaches and resorts, Iran offers the more adventurous traveler a chance to experience the unique Persian culture. Iranians are possibly the most hospitable people I have ever met. You are sure to have a great time as you explore this amazing country full of history and culture.
Iran is a clear winner for the budget conscious with cheap flights and a good exchange rate. Non-stop flights on Aeroflot from Moscow start from $350.
Montenegro is certainly not a new destination for Russians who have been visiting the little nation for years. However, it is only just popping up on the radar of Western Europeans, who generally head for Croatia instead. Montenegro offers the same stunning beaches and scenery of its Balkan neighbour, with a much more relaxed vibe and a cheaper price tag.
Because Montenegro is such a popular destination for Russian tourists, you can get a direct flight to the seaside town of Tivat for around $300. now that is a deal!
5. Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is very close to the Maldives, which are a very popular destination for Russian tourists. Sri Lanka offers a very similar experience – some would even say better – for a fraction of the price. While Sri Lanka does not have unbridled luxury, it makes up for it with a diverse mix of ocean side resorts and mountain retreats.
Flights to Sri Lanka are great value and the prices for goods and services once you arrive make this a great place to visit from Moscow. Direct flights from start from $650.
